After an exhaustive search (OK, like a day), Reggie Bush's Heisman Trophy has been found.
Golf claps.
Where was the 25-pound bronze statue? In the same place it was the last time anyone saw it -- the San Diego Hall of Champions.
According the New Orleans Times-Picayune's James Varney, who apparently searched high and low after the initial story of the missing figure surfaced on Tuesday, the trophy has been there all along and is now preparing to be returned to the Bush family.
But that's not what "The Dan Patrick Show" reported. It quoted a "person in management" as saying: "Reggie Bush's dad came in right after and took it. That's the last we saw of it."
Museum vice president Angela LaChica told the Times-Picayune the trophy had been in the Hall of Champions since it was found wrapped in a blanket and left in a basket on the Hall's doorstep. OK, I made that part up, but she said it was there.
Cover up? Seems like it.
Even though Bush told the Heisman Trophy Trust that he planned to return the trophy last September after the Trust stripped him of the honor, not everyone at the San Diego Hall of Champions agreed. Perhaps the "person in management" had the trophy hidden under a sheet in the back, but was forced to produce it once the story broke. Maybe every time someone would walk by the statue, "person in management" would do the Heisman pose next to the trophy to distract anyone who might be looking at it. Maybe the Heisman in question actually belongs to Ricky Williams or Marcus Allen, both San Diegoans, who earned the honor.
The conspiracy theories are endless.
Regardless, the trophy will be returned to either Bush or one of his family members shortly. No doubt the Heisman Trophy Trust will then be waiting for the FedEx truck to deliver it to New York. That might be a long wait, though. If Bush hasn't returned it in the nine months since he said he would, can't imagine he'll be in a hurry to do it now.
If the Heisman Trophy Trust really wanted the statue back, it could just go to San Diego and take it. It belongs to them, right? Not sure why there's all this rigmarole.
