Ask DLS: How did your Windows 7 SP1 upgrade go?

windows 7 sp 1 service pack 1
Now that the Windows 7 SP1 download is available to the general public and it's also being pushed via Windows Update, we thought we'd check to see how smooth the upgrade process has been for you.

It wasn't all unicorns and double rainbows here in the Download Squad bunker. One laptop refused to progress beyond 66% complete, even after several retries and reboots. Another workstation was left running the update all weekend, and just hit 98% when we returned to work on Tuesday -- only to fail at 99% and start rolling back the operation.

So tell us, DS readers, how was your experience installing the Windows 7 Service Pack 1 update? Hit the poll after the break!

First Windows Phone 7 update results in bricked Samsung phones

windows phone 7 update brick
We didn't expect Microsoft's first global update for Windows Phone 7 go off without a snag, but several owners of Samsung WP7 devices are really regretting pushing the update button yesterday. The update has reportedly had trouble with the Omnia 7, resulting in bricked handsets or an updater which locks up before it completes. Microsoft is aware of the issues, and is currently working to resolve them.

There are also plenty of users reporting that the update still hasn't been offered -- including yours truly and blogger Manan Kakkar. If you've got a Windows Phone 7 device, how did your update experience go? Was it snag free, or or you now holding a very shiny doorstop?

Yeah! Edwards and Kyle are gonna be rivals ... wait, what?

You take Daytona and throw it out the window, because nobody knows quite what the heck is going to happen at that track. So now that we're actually into the season, we lead off with a wreck that involves some of NASCAR's biggest names, Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards. Check it:

Aw, yeah! Kyle knocked Edwards out of the race, and took over the points lead! This one's headed for a brawl, right? Edwards expressed his hope that Kyle hadn't done that intentionally, but we can always pine for a good 99-18 brawl, right? And then Kyle got out of his car right after the race, and this is the shot he fired:

Yeah! That's the kind of attitude we ... wait, hang on. Did Kyle Busch just offer up an honest apology? What planet is this?

Much as we'd like to see a total throwdown between our two top-ranked Sprint Cup drivers, they're both taking the long view here, which is probably a very wise move. Even if it doesn't make for the greatest Monday recaps.

Headlinin': Let the Clowney countdown begin in earnest

Making the morning rounds.

No, honey, these flowers are for Jadveon. As expected, coveted defensive end/predator drone Jadeveon Clowney will announce his school of choice on Feb. 14, his 18th birthday, in a nationally televised "event" on ESPNU. As dominant as Nick Saban has been on the trail, Alabama fans probably shouldn't get their hopes up: Standing opinion among the locals is that Clowney has effectively eliminated the Crimson Tide for instate rivals South Carolina and Clemson, with the Gamecocks still in the driver's seat. "That's what my gut feeling is," said his high school coach, Bobby Carroll, who's sent four of Clowney's former South Pointe High teammates on to play for Steve Spurrier over the last three years, including current defensive starters Stephon Gilmore and DeVonte Holloman. "It's the proximity thing. [Clowney]'s just not sure he wants to make that long ride [to Alabama]. … He's not saying a whole lot. I think he pretty much knows where he wants to go, though." [Spartanburg Herald-Journal, Charleston Post and Courier]

Powers of persuasion. Staying on the recruiting trail, Rivals' annual list of the nation's top 25 recruiters is topped this year by LSU running backs coach Frank Wilson, who led the Tigers' push for homegrown five-stars La'El Collins, Anthony Johnson and Jarvis Landry; he was also at the front of the pack in luring a much-needed quarterback, former Georgia signee Zach Mettenberger, from a community college in Kansas. Yes, heralded pied pipers Ed Orgeron and Trooper Taylor are on the list, but they're both joined by other staffers from USC and Auburn, respectively, in Joe Barry and Tommy Thigpen. [Rivals]

Ealey on ice. Georgia running back Washaun Ealey, UGA's leading rusher the last two seasons, has been suspended indefinitely for unspecified reasons, though he hasn't been dismissed from the team. Early rumors suggest the suspension may stem from a failure to report for a "punishment run" last week. [ESPN, Atlanta Journal-Constitution]

It is time. Elsewhere in Georgia news, the school formally buried its latest dead mascot, UGA VIII, alongside his forebears in Sanford Stadium over the weekend. But it may not have to look far for his replacement: The english bulldog pup held joyously aloft last week by prized signee Isaiah Crowell at his signing day press conference actually is a member of the official Uga lineage, according to his owner, Mike "Big Dawg" Woods, instantly recognizable to Georgia fans as the guy who paints a bulldog on his bald head for every home game. Woods said he would offer the dog Crowell borrowed, Magical Munson Woods, to the school as a successor to Uga VIII. "I'll be glad to give him to Georgia." Woods said. "He's got the background to do it, and I’ve got the papers to prove it." [Columbus Ledger-Enquirer, via Dawg Sports]

The rap sheet. Kansas receiver Chris Omigie, 19, was charged with drunk driving Saturday after an early-morning arrest on campus. Omigie remains on the team, per a KU spokesman, but will face internal discipline. [Lawrence Journal-World]

Quickly… The Tate Forcier World Transfer Tour kicked off in Miami. … Scott Frost is staying at Oregon. … Ohio State commit Chris Carter won't face charges for allegedly groping as many as eight girls at his high school. … A judge dismisses a lawsuit by former Auburn lineman Chaz Ramsey against a college trainer. … Oklahoma may be looking to follow Texas into the network business. … And USC plans to host an agent awareness summit. Right after it firms up its verbal commitment from a 13-year-old.

Spring Practice Stock Characters: Meet the Dueling Quarterbacks

Renewing the annual templates of spring. Today: The most engaging quarterback battles.

ALABAMA: A.J. McCarron vs. Phillip Sims.
Relevant Dynamic: The Heir Apparent vs. The Young Gun.
A.J. McCarron looks exactly like every Crimson Tide quarterback ever: Sturdy, unassuming and unspectacular, expected mainly to keep a stiff upper lip in the huddle, the 'Bama Bangs out of his eyes and the defense and running game out of trouble. The best comparison, given his 6-foot-4 frame, four-star hype and instate roots, is probably to pre-Sabanite starter Brodie Croyle, but his profile is interchangeable with predecessors Tyler Watts, John Parker Wilson and, most recently, Greg McElroy.

Sims, on the other hand, arrived last year from Virginia with considerably more hype as the No. 2 "pro style" slinger in the 2010 recruiting class, according to Rivals, and offers a bigger body and bigger arm – as well as much better odds, as a third or fourth-year starter down the line, to be more than another within-the-offense "manager."

Advantage: McCarron. You have to go way, way back to find the last 'Bama quarterback who jumped the floppy-haired line of succession, which is clearly in McCarron's favor here: He has two years in Jim McElwain's offense to Sims' one, and Nick Saban – like all Crimson Tide coaches before him – has never shown any hesitation to defer to the guy who's going to make the fewest mistakes. With a vicious, veteran defense fueling serious championship ambitions again this fall, that's all they're asking for.

LSU: Jordan Jefferson vs. Jarrett Lee vs. Zach Mettenberger.
Relevant Dynamic: There are no incumbents here.
All incoming coaches are obligated to tell the media "Every position is up for grabs," to instill a sense of competition, combat complacency, etc. But new offensive coordinator Steve Kragthorpe's insistence that Jordan Jefferson, starter for 27 of the Tigers' last 28 games since the end of his freshman season in 2008, isn't a shoo-in for the job carries a little added credibility – namely, because Jefferson struggled to stay on the field as a seemingly entrenched starter in 2010, regularly yielding to former pick-six king Jarrett Lee and finishing near the bottom of the SEC in pass efficiency. Lee clearly outshone Jefferson in the wins over Tennessee and Florida in early October, the depths of Jefferson's two-month, 32-quarter drought without a touchdown pass.

If LSU knows it can win with modest efforts from Jefferson and Lee – or in spite of them – Mettenberger, a Georgia transfer by way of junior college, offers the big-play potential that's been so sorely lacking: At 6-foot-5, 240 pounds, he looks every bit the part of an NFL-bound fireballer in the pocket, and he only needs to reproduce a fraction of the Cam Newton Effect to ensure the Tigers are in the thick of the SEC and BCS championship races.

Advantage: Jefferson. Jefferson pulled away from Lee with hyper-efficient efforts against Alabama and Ole Miss in November and went out with a three-touchdown effort against Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl, after throwing four touchdowns in the entire regular season. Mettenberger may be the second coming of Ben Roethlisberger (in more ways than one), but it's going to take another significant regression from the incumbent to get him on the field.

MIAMI: Jacory Harris vs. Stephen Morris.
Relevant Dynamic: The Veteran vs. The Clean Slate.
Harris, like Jefferson, enters his senior season as a symbol of inconsistency and mediocrity after two full seasons as an entrenched starter, also under a new offensive coordinator who insists the job is anyone's to win. That's a hard fall for Harris, who opened his junior season as a rising star on a rising team. Instead, the Hurricanes were blown out of there biggest games against Ohio State and Florida State, Harris was knocked out of the lineup for almost a month in a sobering loss at Virginia, attendance dwindled, the turnover margin soared and coach Randy Shannon was fired immediately following a season-ending flop with Harris back in the saddle against South Florida. In his last start, Harris looked like he'd rather be anywhere but the Sun Bowl, where he served up three interceptions in 13 snaps in an embarrassing rout at the hands of Notre Dame, pushing his career total to a staggering 39 picks in three years.

Stephen Morris wasn't appreciably better in relief, putting up nine INTs himself in five-and-a-half games, but he was a) A true freshman who fully expected to redshirt until Harris' injury, and b) The closest the 'Canes had to a spark as the season unraveled, leading an impressive win over Georgia Tech and a late comeback to beat Maryland in his first two starts.

Advantage: Morris. Most importantly, Morris offers a clear demarcation between the Shannon era and the new rebuilding campaign under coach Al Golden. Faced with two interception-prone QBs learning a new system, there's no reason not to hand the reins to the long-term solution unless Harris clearly outplays him.

NOTRE DAME: Dayne Crist vs. Tommy Rees.
Relevant Dynamic: The Prototype vs. The Winner.
On paper, Dayne Crist still has the NFL size, golden arm, five-star recruiting hype and clean-cut reputation of a can't-miss star-in-waiting. But how long are the Irish willing to wait? Three full years into his career, they barely have a better grasp of the program's would-be savior than they did at this time last year – before his first season as a starter was cut short by his second major knee injury in as many years.

They do that his departure from the lineup heralded an immediate reversal in the team's fortune: In Crist's nine starts, Notre Dame was foundering at 4-5 with back-to-back humiliations at the hands of Navy and Tulsa. After his injury, the Irish reversed their typical November fade to win four straight under true freshman Tommy Rees, including their first win over a ranked team (Utah) since early 2006, their first win over USC since 2002 and a convincing bowl rout over Miami.

Advantage: Crist. Most of the credit for the late turnaround went to the surging defense, not Rees, and coach Brian Kelly's history suggests he's not inclined to defer to the "hot hand" over his designated starter: Faced with a similar situation in Cincinnati in 2009, he readily yanked successful backup Zach Collaros for starter Tony Pike as soon as Pike was ready to resume the job after a four-week absence. In the same vein, Crist's obvious upside should put him back in the driver's seat, unless his rehab unexpectedly extends through the spring.

PENN STATE: Robert Bolden vs. Matt McGloin.
Relevant Dynamic: The Athlete vs. The Game Manager.
Yes, this is a rubber match: Bolden took Round One, surprisingly emerging from a quartet of contenders to become the first true freshman QB to start a season opener in Penn State history. Round Two belonged to McGloin, who started the last six after stepping in for a concussed (and predictably struggling) Bolden in October – a streak that ended with McGloin's 17-of-41, five-interception debacle against Florida in the Outback Bowl, effectively reopening the competition.

Advantage: Bolden. Coaches were determined enough to keep Bolden around that they successfully blocked his attempt to transfer in the immediate aftermath of the bowl game – he didn't see the field at all during McGloin's collapse, which even Joe Paterno admitted was a mistake – and convinced him to stay through the spring. Bolden made it pretty clear over the weekend that he's on the first bus out if he doesn't win the job, and the same potential that carried him into the starting job last August should give him the edge with a season under his belt.

WASHINGTON: Nick Montana vs. Keith Price.
Relevant Dynamic: The Pedigree vs. The Dual Threat.
The Huskies' battle could be alternately labeled "Blank Slate vs. Blank Slate." Price took snaps in eight games last year as a redshirt freshman, but only saw significant action in one, a predictably grisly, 53-16 loss at Oregon with senior hero Jake Locker rehabbing a cracked rib. Nick "Yes That Montana" Montana, spawn of Joe, spent a redshirt season working with the scout team. Neither has particularly notable size or recruiting hype (Montana had a much better list of offers than you'd expect for a relatively spindly three-star recruit, but his last name is also "Montana"), and coach Steve Sarkisian has downplayed the alleged differences in their arms and legs, respectively, claiming Price is a better passer and Montana a better runner than either gets credit for.

Advantage: Price. The local assumption is that Price's scanty game experience gives him a slight edge, though the position is wide open enough that the competition is expected to continue well into the fall, when oversized true freshman Derrick Brown (6-3/225) and JUCO transfer Antavius Sims are also expected to get long looks, the latter as a "Wildcat" option. Either way, running back Chris Polk can probably expect to carry a heavier share of the offense.

Headlinin': The return of Eric LeGrand

Making the morning rounds.

Looking good. Rutgers defensive lineman Eric LeGrand received a standing ovation from 3,000 well-wishers Saturday at an on-campus fundraiser in his honor, his first public appearance since being paralyzed from the neck down during the Scarlet Knights' win over Army last October. LeGrand told ESPN last month he's regained sensation throughout his body and seemed to be in good spirits during the event (hosted by Rutgers and MTV alum Bill Bellamy), telling the crowd "I'm gonna keep chopping' and doing my rehab." [Newark Star-Ledger]

RIP. The family of former Notre Dame star Dave Duerson, a 1982 All-American and two-time Super Bowl winner who apparently committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest last week, will donate his brain to concussion research at Boston University, per Duerson's wishes. "He had informed (his family) at some point that he wanted his brain to be studied so people could learn more about the effect of brain trauma and so kids could play the game more safely in the future," said Chris Nowinski, co-director of BU's Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy, in the Chicago Tribune. "The family requested that I confirm that Mr. Duerson's brain was donated to our research center, and it was Mr. Duerson's wishes." [South Bend Tribune, Chicago Tribune]

The saga continues. The Fiesta Bowl informed the IRS in federal tax returns filed last week that it's in the process of reviewing political expenditures and possible "excessive benefits" to top officials – presumably including bowl CEO John Junker, who received a substantial raise to nearly $600,000 per year and was placed on administrative leave earlier this month. An ongoing state attorney general's probe into political contributions by Fiesta Bowl employees, allegedly encouraged and later reimbursed by the bowl, threatens the organization's non-profit status.

The Fiesta Bowl – along with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office – is also investigating an arrangement that that paid $508,776 in 2009-10 to a local security firm, Blue Steel Consulting, owned by a lieutenant in the sheriff's office. That was more than triple what the bowl paid Blue Steel (fans of "The Wire" should enjoy that reference) in 2008-09 and more than the firm took in from its previous three Fiesta Bowl contracts combined. And it doesn't include an undisclosed amount for private security for a pair of bowl officials. [Arizona Republic]

Come on people now, smile on your brother. A few thousand turned out Saturday to memorialize a pair of terminal oak trees at Auburn's Toomer's Corner, including quite a few Alabama fans, who were literally embraced by the home crowd. The Facebook group "Tide for Toomer's" received so many donations over the weekend – reportedly more than $36,000 from 1,700 donors as of Sunday night – that it capped its PayPal account and began redirecting visitors to Auburn's official Toomer's Trees and Traditions Fund. [Al.com, Tide for Toomer's]

Meanwhile, accused tree-poisoner Harvey Updyke was released from prison on Friday night, and didn't appreciate the attention. [Columbus Ledger-Enquirer, WAKA TV]

Quickly… TCU missed out on LaMichael James because it couldn't get his name right. … Oregon running back Dontae Williams, a top-200 recruit last year, is transferring out of the Ducks' crowded backfield. … Jaxon Shipley finished high school early, cut short a successful track career and delayed his arrival at Texas for a few more months of hanging out with his older brother. … Al Golden is excited about Tate Forcier's "incredible resumé." … There's no spring quarterback derby in the works at Syracuse. … And the Mrs. Rich Rod sale brought in its share for the Salvation Army, too.

Lavasoft Rogue Gallery puts fake antivirus and rogue applications on display

It's hard for less-savvy computer users to stay out of trouble on the Internet, and part of the problem is that they just don't know how to identify potential threats. Fortunately, there are plenty of great online resources you can use, or point your friends and family to. We've already covered the excellent Facecrooks, which helps users avoid trouble on Facebook, and today we're taking a look at the Lavasoft Rogue Gallery.

Lavasoft is the company behind Ad-Aware, the granddaddy of adware removal apps. Though its malware cleanup crown has been snatched away by Malwarebytes in recent years, Ad-Aware remains enormously popular -- and Lavasoft provides a nice public service by displaying the fake antivirus (fakeAV) and rogue applications it discovers for all to see.

Rogue applications are those nasty programs which appear to be useful utilities like antivirus or Windows tune-up tools. In reality, of course, they're some of the nastiest threats around. They're easy enough to spot if you know what to look for, so spending a few minutes going through the Lavasoft Rogue Gallery is highly recommend to anyone who needs a bit of help avoiding Internet dangers.

Gmail in the midst of service interruption

If you are a Gmail user today may not be starting smoothly for you. Gmail is having a service disruption right now and according to some reports, the problem is going well beyond simply not being able to log into Gmail.

Some users are reporting that once they are able to log in, they are being greeted by welcome messages as if they are a new user. Some of the people are claiming that the outage has resulted in the loss of emails, chat logs and more.

I haven?t backed up my Gmail account in years; luckily, for me I use Outlook to get mail from Gmail so I have offline copies of everything. My personal Gmail account is fine right now so the disruption is apparently not affecting everyone. As of 5am this morning Google says that it is investigating the issue and the next update will come at 7am.

Scouting combine: Saturday winners and losers

The drills began on Saturday at the scouting combine in Indianapolis, with offensive linemen and tight ends taking the lion's share of the drills on the field of Lucas Oil stadium. But beyond the drills, there were other players taking part in the media frenzy that has been going on since Thursday morning. Defensive linemen and linebackers took to three podiums, as did a few different skill position players who were stragglers from Friday's interview trio of quarterbacks, running backs, and receivers. Based on what happened on and off the field, here are three players on each side of the equation - three who helped their cases on the short term, and three who either may want to re-think their approaches, or were the victim of bad injury luck.

Winners

Cam Newton, QB, Auburn - Newton's 14-minute media session was as prepared and rehearsed as could be, but we all expected that. But coming as it did so soon after Ryan Mallett's meltdown (you'll read about this soon), it was a bit if a breath of fresh air in that Newton at least tried to address certain questions about his past, and was able to deflect the ones he didn't. However, Newton's media savvy drops at times - and at these times, you see a more vulnerable individual.

He seemed especially concerned with the rapid-fire approach of the meetings with teams, in which prospects are asked about what they've done right and wrong in their lives, and asked to draw plays up on a whiteboard. When you hear a potential first-round pick say that the process has "everyone in the combine was going through the same process, asking themselves questions, like, ‘Is this really what I want to do?'", you tend to wonder if all that talk about overcoming adversity is just a front. Nonetheless, the real proof with Newton will come during his drills on Sunday, when he'll be able to answer the on-field questions that have him more comfortable. Getting past the media scrum as well as he did, though, was a reasonable first step/

Ryan Bartholomew, C, Syracuse - Bartholomew is a mid-ranked prospect at a position that doesn't really have a standout, which means that he's been categorized as a late-round pick or potential undrafted free agent. At least until Saturday, when he put together a size/speed combo platter that really impressed. He led all bench-pressers with 33 reps, ran a 4.97 40-yard dash (not bad for a guy standing 6-foot-1 and weighing 300 pounds), and placed well in the 20-yard shuttle as well. Bartholomew is still putting his game together, but standard operating procedure with extreme athletes of any stripe is to take a flyer near the end of the draft if there's potential. In that element, Bartholomew may have pushed his stock up a round.

Virgil Green, TE, Nevada - We've already discussed the day that USC tight end Jordan Cameron had - the converted wideout looked a lot like one of those tight ends whose stock picks up heavily after a day of freakish athleticism. But in the end, Green did Cameron and Florida Atlantic's Rob Housler one better by putting up the most complete set of numbers relating to his position. Fast, non-blocking tight ends need to do two things - get down the seam in a hurry, and get vertical in the end zone. When you can put together a 4.64 40-yard dash and a 42.5-inch vertical jump (five inches better than anyone else today), it's easy for teams to project you as the next great offensive threat at the position.

Losers

DaQuan Bowers, DE, Clemson - Bowers didn't have the worst podium meltdown - that honor clearly belonged to Ryan Mallett - but his assertion that his torn meniscus was "100 percent" raised a few eyebrows. Projected by some as the first overall pick, Bowers elected to skip the combine workouts, and the "100 percent" comment gained a lot of steam ... unless you read the entire statement. "I am 100 percent," Bowers actually said. "It was a small meniscus tear. It hampered me from my first three weeks of training, which is why I am not doing anything at the combine because I feel that I want the same amount of time that everybody else had to train and fully prepare for the combine."

That's fairly standard for people coming off of injuries in this situation; just because you're back to normal doesn't mean you're yet in the kind of shape you need to be to do the combine drills at an elite standard. But the soundbite may come back to haunt him if he doesn't shine at his Pro Day.

Tryon Smith, USC - Projected by some as the second-best tackle in this draft class because of his raw athletic gifts, Smith played right tackle at USC at 280 pounds, and wanted to show that his increase in weight to 307 pounds in tome for the combine was related to an increase in core strength. But after putting 29 reps up on the bench press, Smith pulled out of the rest of the drills because he's still rehabbing from a knee injury. He's expected to work out at his Pro Day on March 30, but it could be a rough month for him - his tape doesn't have enough examples of next-level strength, and teams are going to have to imagine him at left tackle at this point.

Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas - We've saved the best for last. It's easy to understand that Mallett doesn't want to talk about the rumors relating to his character and alleged (we need to underline alleged) drug use, but the way he handled his abbreviated press conference didn't just add to the questions; it also perpetuated the perception of Mallett as a person who is defensive in all the wrong ways.

The first question was about his supposed drug use, which set things off the wrong way. "First one, huh? No, I'm not going to talk about that right now," Mallett responded. I've got interviews with the teams. And what teams need to know, they need to know. I'm going to leave it at that." Eight minutes later, when it was pointed out to Mallett that these questions weren't going away if he didn't address them, he simply cut the media session short. When you see how Mallett handles a challenge in a relatively benevolent situation, it doesn't bode well. Most NFL teams have taken the lesion of Ryan Leaf to heart when it comes to quarterbacks - they spend much more time on the intangibles these days, and unless Mallett is able to present a very different version of himself to NFL teams, he's going to drop precipitously down quite a few NFL boards.

Banshee media player for Windows goes alpha

banshee audio video player windows
Banshee has been one of the top Linux media players for ages, and now the venerable audio and video app has officially made its way to Windows. The first alpha release of Banshee for Windows is now available for download, and it's exactly what you would expect: it's very true to the Linux experience, and it's got a few kinks which still need working out before it's ready for prime time on Windows.

Like any good media player, Banshee offers features like smart playlist, podcast, audiobook, and online radio support, ID3 tag editing, song ratings, track information lookup, full screen mode, system tray playback controls, and toast notifications.

Unfortunately, it's still rather rough around the edges. Banshee's Last.fm features and equalizer caused numerous crashes, and the app eventually quit trying to play tracks after a handful of restarts. Rebooting Windows was the only way to get Banshee playing again.

Still, this is just the first alpha release! We're sure that things will improve quickly with future builds.

Jamell Fleming's exit caps a sobering week for ambitious Sooners

While Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops was adding a cool million to his bank account this week, his team was picking up three strikes against its offseason momentum as the near-unanimous favorite for for the 2011 national championship. Strike one: The NCAA docked OU a full week's worth of workouts for allegedly keeping too close a watch on this winter's "voluntary" sessions. Strike two: Defensive tackle Stacy McGee, a returning starter in the middle of the line, was pulled over with marijuana and marijuana accessories in his car last weekend, putting his status for doubt for spring practice, at minimum. And today, strike three: Starting cornerback Jamell Fleming, arguably the most productive member of arguably the Big 12's best secondary in 2010, is no longer with the team for unexplained reasons.

Fleming's not a big name, even within the Big 12 – he was passed over for an all-conference nod last year despite easily leading the league in passes defended and tying for the lead in interceptions, including a 56-yard pick-six against UConn in the Fiesta Bowl – but as vital as he was as a fourth-year junior in 2010, the departure of senior safeties Quinton Carter and Jonathan Nelson made Fleming's experience essential in 2011. For a team playing for the highest stakes, the secondary now looks like a bona fide weakness.

That is, if Fleming's absence is permanent; ideally, he'll work out his personal issues in time to resume his position for the season, and the Sooners' high-octane offense will render the defense's flaws irrelevant, anyway, thus relegating a bad week in February to a blip in the desert. (Oregon certainly had a rougher go of it at this time last year, including the loss of its star quarterback, to no apparent effect when the season rolled around. And no would-be contender goes into 2011 with the deck stacked as solidly against it as Ohio State.) At the same time, building a championship lineup can be like surviving a game of Jenga: When your season effectively hinges on a margin of error of zero, you never know which individual piece could be the one that sends it toppling.

Gustafsson chokes out a tired Te Huna at UFC 127

James Te Huna was a little too wired fighting in front of the home crowd in Australia. The Sydney resident fought at a frantic pace in the opening minute, then faded quickly before becoming a first round rear-naked choke victim of Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 127.

Less than 30 seconds into the fight, Te Huna (12-5, 1-1 UFC) scored a takedown and was incredibly active on top. Gustafsson did a nice job of weathering the storm. Te Huna was throwing punches and elbows from side control and looked to have an easy pass for the mount, but never seized the opportunity.

Gustafsson settled Te Huna down by getting him, first in his half guard and then full guard. The Swede got back to his feet with three minutes left in the round. A minute later, Gustafsson scored a takedown against Te Huna, who was clearly winded. He scored another when he reversed a Te Huna takedown attempt and quickly took his back with 1:10 left. Te Huna didn't provide much opposition on the ground. Gustafsson flattened him out and applied a rear-naked choke. Te Huna survived and spun out, but Gustafsson stayed with it and got the New Zealander back to his stomach where he latched on the finishing submission. He got the tap at the 4:27 mark of the first.

At 6-foot-5, Gustafsson, 24, is an intriguing light heavyweight prospect. He's now 3-1 in the UFC with his only loss coming against super-prospect Phil Davis. He's also got wins over Jared Hamman and veteran striker Cyrille Diabate.

HTC Thunderbolt Available Online But Can?t Checkout

With the HTC Thunderbolt release once again postponed, it seems fans are getting antsy and a little crazy. One fan has taken it upon himself to figure out a way on HTC’s online store to force the listed device into his shopping cart even though he could not checkout. He was then kind enough to share his process and even offer up the below screenshot as proof of his deed.

The device is already listed on the HTC online store, but is shown as unavailable and therefore cannot be added to the online shopping cart. The anonymous fan was able to get the item to show up in the shopping cart by some method of copying and pasting of the url address and then changing the item number.

Below are his own words:

Go to HTC?s online store, go to any product detail page. ?Copy link address? for the ?Add to cart? link. Paste to the address bar, change product ID to 38411, submit. You?ll be taken to an HTC Incredible page, but when you click to view your ?Cart,? you?ll have an HTC Thunderbolt there for $699.99. However, you can?t check out due to no plans being available for this phone.

Spring Swing: Salt River Fields forever, Rockies and D-backs say

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Let me take you down, 'cause we're going to Salt River Fields. Everything is real nice and something to write home about.

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies new spring training complex, set on 140 green acres of Native American resort land called Talking Stick, appears to be worth every bit of the $130 million it cost to build. It already has been referred to as the "Ninth Wonder of the World," a "modern marvel" and the "Versailles of spring training facilities."

Both teams have said they liked training two hours southwest in Tucson, but where they're at now is the place to be. The Rockies have facilities down the right-field line, the D-backs have left field.

"This place is frickin' unreal," D-backs left-hander Clay Zavada said. "It’s better than a lot of big league places, you know? The quality of the playing field's even pretty nice. This has everything. They give you everything here.

"Like I told a couple of the other guys, if Walt Disney or Willie Wonka built a baseball complex, this would be it."

And if any team in the National League needed to punch a golden ticket and make a fresh start in a new place — the happiest place on baseball Earth? — the Diamondbacks would be a prime choice.

Arizona went 65-97 in 2010, firing the field manager and, later, the general manager along the way. Later today, I'll give you a look at where the D-backs stand. But for now, check out more of the ballpark.

The D-backs and Rockies stood shoulder to shoulder, respectively, just like opening day of the regular season. Only, at spring training, the lines stretch well beyond the bases. To infinity, almost. Not really.

* * *

Looks like a major league scoreboard in left, doesn't it? This is right before the D-backs rallied against the Rockies for a five-run ninth.

* * *

The bullpen along the left-field line allows fans a rare bird's eye view — only from up close — of the relief corps. This is Daniel Stange, who appears as though he's going to pitch from his glove hand. But he's just going through the motions.

* * *

Huge concourse for spring training. Huge. Many of the 12,514 fans had scattered by the time I took this photo. One of the unique features for fans is a party deck behind home plate, above the media/suite level.

* * *

With the Rockies trying to close it out, this guy's got the rally cap working for Arizona. Little help?

* * *

It was lively after Paul Goldschmidt went deep for a score-tying three-run homer.

 * * *

Just like when Luis Gonzalez won the 2001 World Series!

* * *

Speak of the devil!

* * *

The next time you're near Scottsdale, bring a blanket and sit on the lawn and watch a game at Talking Stick.
