TweetDeck to launch as HTML5 Web app, now accepting beta testers

When TweetDeck landed in the Chrome Web Store, it seemed like an indication that it might eventually evolve into a pure HTML5 Web app. Now it looks as though that's exactly what's going to happen, with TweetDeck announcing that a new, not-just-for-Chrome Web client is ready for beta testing.

It's a natural progression for TweetDeck, especially since its originally Adobe Air app is practically all Web code. TweetDeck Web will sport a feature set which is nearly identical to the Chrome app, with the notable exception of Twitter streaming.

Initially, TweetDeck is targeting Firefox 4 and 3.6, Google Chrome, and Safari. Opera and Internet Explorer 9 won't be invited to the dance until a bit later on.

If you'd like to get in on the TweetDeck Web beta, head on over and register -- or sign up using your existing TweetDeck account.

Headlinin’: Anointing ‘The Most Scandalous Year in College Sports’

Making the morning rounds.

? Breaking Bad. Capitalizing on the end of the academic term, the latest edition of ESPN the Magazine anoints 2010-11 "The Most Scandalous Year in College Sports," which is stating the obvious: On the football side alone, the low-down sagas of Jim Tressel, Cam Newton, Reggie Bush, John Blake and John Junker have already enshrined them among the most notorious scandal-makers in NCAA history, and they're really only the tip of the iceberg. Along with the assorted trials of multiple high-profile basketball coaches, either the last 12 months will turn out to be the Year the NCAA Woke Up, or they've all been a little too inspired by the success of Walter White. [ESPN the Magazine]

? "Nonprofit" doesn't mean nobody profits. On that note, minor chords sounded around Sugar Bowl offices Wednesday, when a new IRS filing showed it paid CEO Paul Hoolahan nearly $600,000 in 2009 ?which was actually down from his $645,000 take in 2008, due to the larger bonus he received that year for overseeing the BCS Championship Game. Hoolahan's $594,000 salary in '09 is slightly higher than the $592,000 earned that year by ex-Fiesta Bowl CEO John Junker, whose head now rests on a pike as a warning to his BCS colleagues. [Associated Press]

? Trickle-down academics. The Big Ten has begun preliminary talks about funneling more scholarship money to football and basketball players in the form of a "cost of attendance" increase, which would ostensibly cover certain living expenses ? transportation, clothing, etc. ? that their current scholarships don't cover. Closing the gap would cost schools an extra $3,000 per athlete per year, chump change for the likes of Michigan and Ohio State but a steep proposition for some less-privileged competition; if Title IX extends the proposed increase across all sports, most Division I athletic departments won't have a prayer of keeping pace. [ESPN]

? I feel a Slive. SEC commissioner Mike Slive said Wednesday he plans to introduce legislation combating oversigning and other aspects of "roster management" at conference meetings in Destin, Fla., later this month, though he kept his cards close to the vest about what that might entail. "It's a question of over-signing, grayshirting, early admissions, summer school admission," Slive told the Macon Telegraph. "We've put together what we call a bit of a package to address these issues, that will give our people a chance to think about these issues in a more global fashion. So then it will be an important discussion item in Destin." From the sounds of it, the "discussion" will likely result in a vote, which I'd bet splits along divisional lines. [Macon Telegraph]

? Bye, everybody! Oregon State has dismissed head trainer Barney Graff "amid growing questions and complaints" about his work and the OSU sports medicine department in general. Graff joined the staff in 1997 under coach Mike Riley, who declined to go into details but acknowledged that he'd met with Graff several times to address "recurring problems" and that some players had lost confidence in the care they were receiving. (Others have openly complained about treatment on Graff's watch.)

"I think I can say we're just going a different direction with this medical situation," Riley said. "We're going to have new leadership, and a new culture." [The Oregonian]

? Happy trails. Arkansas offensive lineman Seth Oxner, a full-time starter in 2009 and a key backup last year, confirmed Wednesday he's leaving the team with a year of eligibility remaining after earning his degree in applied exercise science last weekend. Oxner didn't elaborate on his immediate plans, but is expected to return to his hometown to finish his career with the world famous Boll Weevils of Arkansas-Monticello. [Arkansas Democrat-Gazette]

Quickly… Jim Tressel says Brady Hoke boosts the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry, but doesn't elaborate. … Georgia and Clemson set dates for another temporary renewal of hostilities. … Oklahoma breaks out the ponies for Gameday. … Purdue's 15-man class may be losing another member. … ESPN on the Aaron Douglas fiasco. … A Supreme Court justice compares critics of the court to bickering SEC fans. … And former Kentucky quarterback Jared Lorenzen is keeping it hefty in arena ball.

Ultrasn0w 1.2.1 carrier unlock now available for jailbroken iPhones running iOS 4.3.1

ultrasn0w 1.2.1Anyone who relies on a carrier unlock to use their iPhone on another GSM carrier, can now take the iOS 4.3.1 plunge thanks to ultrasn0w 1.2.1. The iPhone Dev-Team have worked their magic to make ultrasn0w functional once again for the iPhone 4 (GSM), 3GS and 3G, and to correct a signal bar issue for anyone maintaining an older baseband but not using an unlock.

It's important to note that this isn't a new carrier unlock, and still requires an older baseband. Therefore if you're intending to upgrade to iOS 4.3.1 make sure you use something like Pwnage Tool to maintain your existing baseband, and do not just upgrade using iTunes in the hope of using redsn0w to jailbreak, as that will result in ultrasn0w being locked out.

Once you've jailbroken your iPhone using Pwnage Tool, fire up Cydia and search for ultrasn0w to get your carrier unlock installed, then just reboot your phone. Voila! Carrier unlocked.

Mountaineers’ next head coach allegedly tossed from West Virginia casino

Dana Holgorsen comes out of the Hal Mumme/Mike Leach school of prolific, up-tempo spread offenses, which is exactly what West Virginia was bargaining for when it poached Holgorsen from Oklahoma State last December to remake the stale-looking Mountaineer offense in the image of his top-ranked attacks at OSU and Houston as offensive coordinator and head coach-in-waiting. With the prolific passing game, though, comes an heir apparent with more than a little bit of the Captain in him: Holgorsen is a bachelor as he nears age 40, spent his entire year in Stillwater living out of a hotel and openly pounds Red Bull on the sideline.

And as of last week, according to the Charleston Daily Mail, he's under investigation by West Virginia for reportedly being forcibly removed from a local casino in the wee hours of a weekday morning:

Multiple sources told the Charleston Daily Mail Holgorsen was removed from Mardi Gras Casino & Resort after 3 a.m. May 18. Holgorsen had been at a Mountaineer Athletic Club function earlier in the day in Logan before spending the evening at the casino with other university representatives. […]

Holgorsen's behavior allegedly reached a point that necessitated involvement from on-site security, sources said. Holgorsen was escorted out of the casino with the episode caught on surveillance. University representatives who were with Holgorsen were said to have then intervened. No arrest was made.

Police records indicate Metro 911 received a call from the casino at 3:13 a.m. that night. A "white male" was said to be "refusing to cooperate with the casino's management." Casino supervisors had the male detained at the time.

The Nitro Police Department was dispatched to the scene. The official records do not say what happened next, but it's believed Holgorsen was released under the supervision of those he was with.

There is no record of an arrest nor, apparently, any official record that mentions Holgorsen by name. No one seems to have gotten their hands on the security tapes ? yet ? though their emergence may be inevitable now that the story is out.

But sans criminal charges, the first question isn't "What can West Virginia prove?" but "How much does West Virginia care?" Considering that the incident is now a week old and reportedly involved other university personnel, the silence from the university may be some indication that Holgo's bosses aren't out for knee-jerk blood. Then again, it can hardly brush aside a credible story placing the new face of the program in a situation that was unimaginable under the old face ? one that seems more likely to denounce a casino as a den of iniquity than be caught inside of one, much less at 3 a.m. on a Thursday morning ? with a "no comment." At best, WVU will be able to claim insufficient evidence; at worst, it will feel compelled to crack down with a suspension or (if alcohol was involved) some kind of treatment program.

As always, that devil is in the details. Either way, though, the transition to the pass-happy reign of Holgo the Barbarian just got a little rockier.

Lockout has Collinsworth going back to high school … as a coach

People are doing different things as the NFL lockout drags on ? some are finding alternate employment, others are going back to school to get their degrees, others are boxing and riding bulls, and most players are engaging in workouts they've put together with their teammates.

But what are you supposed to do if you're an NFL broadcaster, you're stuck waiting for play to resume, and you have very little faith in the idea that it will do so on time? If you're former Cincinnati Bengals receiver Cris Collinsworth, now one of the most respected voices in the business as part of NBC'sSunday Night Footballcrew, you go back to high school.

As a coach.

At his own site, FootballPros.com, Collinsworth said that he has accepted the offer of head coach Dale Mueller to become the receivers coach at Highland High in Kentucky, where Collinsworth's son Jac just happens to attend and play. "I had already polluted his brain with most of my receiving advice," Collinsworth wrote. "But what the heck, the NFL will probably miss at least half of their season anyway, I agreed. Today is my first day. I just got the playbook and I feel like a first year rookie all over again. The plays are scrambled eggs in my brain, and I feel a little anxious. But, I love coaching. I coached many of these kids in the junior football league, and they always kept me entertained."

Great idea, but we're less than entertained by Collinsworth's notion that half the season could be lost. Especially since the 12-time Emmy winner is pretty dialed in when it comes to league matters, and probably wouldn't make a commitment like this unless he thought there was really something to a truncated season.

"I had a Xavier Soccer coach tell me that at least once a week he rolls the ball out on the field and steps aside," Collinsworth wrote. "He lets the kids play so that he can learn from them. He said they have a creative imagination that no adult could understand. I hope I can bring some of that imagination to Highlands HS. After four straight state football championships, there is only one way for the Highlands Bluebirds to go with me. Maybe the NFL will save me and actually play football, but if not, you will know where to find me on Friday nights. Go Birds!"

We can only hope the NFL will step in and let Collinsworth return to his primary job on time … but until then … sure. Go Birds! It's pretty cool that Collinsworth gets to coach his son, and the team will surely benefit from his experience. It's just too bad it's under these particular circumstances.

Breakfast Buffet: Demetri Goodson’s next move? Baylor football.

1. Former Gonzaga point guard Demetri Goodson has decided to transfer to Baylor, but he won't be joining the Bears' crowded backcourt. Instead the Texas native will trade his high tops for cleats and join the Baylor football program, following in the footsteps of older brother Mike, who is now a running back with the Carolina Panthers.

2. Most of the debate surrounding this Pat Forde column centered on the placement of Duke among college basketball's top overachievers, but it was the absence of Wisconsin that caught my attention. The Badgers continually being among the 20 best teams in the nation despite a dearth of high school talent in the stateprobably makes them worthy of inclusion among the top 10 overachievers.

3. One of the casualties of the Big East swallowing up the upper echelon of Conference USA in 2005 was the end of the rivalry between Memphis and Louisville. Those two programs took a step toward restoring that rivalry after a six-year layoff with the announcement of a home-and-home series to begin next season in Louisville.

4. Penn State will interview Ron Everhart this week, no surprise considering the Duquesne coach possesses certain qualities the Nittany Lions should find attractive. Not only does he have strong recruiting ties in the Northeast, he has shown the ability to rebuild programs in even more challenging situations than at Penn State.

5. Whereas the Maui Invitational appears to be as loaded as it has been in years, one of the other preseason crown jewels doesn't boast nearly as tantalizing a field. The four host schools for next season's Preseason NIT will be Syracuse, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma State and Stanford, three of whom missed the NCAA tournament last season.

Why's Arizona so excited about incoming freshman Nick Johnson? This video of the Findlay Prep shooting guard should provide some clues. The Wildcats won't have Derrick Williams or MoMo Jones next season, but Johnson is part of a highly touted recruiting class that should ensure the program doesn't fall far.

Rumour mill: Microsoft buying Nokia?

Russian blogger claims to have the world on Steve Ballmer's next acquisition target

A notable rumour going around: Microsoft is going to bid for Nokia, the world's most prolific maker of mobile handsets, although passed now by Apple for revenue from mobile phones.

The rumour comes courtesy of Russian blogger Eldar Mutazin, who has form: he suggested last year that there were talks going on between Nokia and Microsoft over Windows Phone, at a time when everybody thought Nokia was going to stick rigidly to Symbian - since ditched. He has also been sued by Nokia in July 2010 over the fact that he got some hands-on time with some new Nokia kit - something they were unhappy about. (The lawsuit is a clue.) So clearly he has contacts inside the Finnish company.

He also forecast that Nokia would kill off the Ovi brand (for its online store) - something that the company then went ahead and did on Monday.

Then again, he has also suggested that current chief executive Stephen Elop (ex-Microsoft, if you needed a reminder) will resign at the end of 2012. That stretches our credulity, to be honest, because Elop doesn't strike us as the sort of person who would leave a job half-finished. And even if he did oversee the sale to Microsoft, to become the new Mobile division, that wouldn't be the time to give it up.

Nokia's UK director of communications Mark Squires tweeted that "We typically don't comment on rumours. But we have to say that Eldar's rumours are getting obviously less accurate with every passing moment." This is what you might call a non-denial denial. He's not saying it's untrue. He's just commenting on the general shape of Eldar's rumours.

So if we assume that this rumour is true, what sort of price might Microsoft be obliged to pay?

Nokia's current market cap is $32bn (19.7bn), and it has fallen from around $44bn in the days before the Microsoft-Nokia tieup.

Here's how it looks since the start of the year:

And here's how it's fared since 2009:

And here's the longer view, since 2006:

Microsoft's cash pile? After that $8bn Skype acquisition, just $32bn. Hey, look, same number!

But there would surely be a premium for the mobile division, which is profit-making, unlike the other Nokia divisions - maps business Navteq, which bumps along making small losses (-?62m on ?262m revenue in the first quarter, total loss of ?225m on revenues of ?1bn last year), and phone networks business Nokia Siemens Networks, which makes really quite large losses (-?142m on ?3.1bn last quarter, loss of ?602m on revenues of ?12.6bn last year).

So Navteq makes roughly a -25% return, while NSN makes a -5% return on revenues. But NSN loses bigger.

If Microsoft buys the mobile division, it will have to find a tremendous dowry to pacify the shareholders at Nokia who will be left with two pretty worthless companies - Navteq's business model is being undercut by Google, which offers maps for free on handsets, and NSN is being chewed up by Huawei and Ericsson. They might try to sell them off, but the reality is that Navteq and NSN are arguably depressing the value of the mobile division, not inflating it. Without them, Nokia could be worth rather more, because at least the mobile division is profit-making and cash-generating.

You'd have to expect therefore that it would be a cash-and-shares deal. But that would require Microsoft to issue more shares, and that will depress its share price even more than it already has, and leads to Microsoft's shareholders - already used to pain, since they've watched the shares go sideways for the best part of a decade - howling even louder. If Steve Ballmer were perceived to make even the slightest misstep, they would be calling it the final straw. Well, you'd hope they would.

Yes, it would make a lot of sense strategically: adding Skype to the largest purveyor of smartphones in the world (24m v Apple's 18m, though Apple makes more revenue from phones - and so is the world's biggest phone maker by revenue, though not volume) would be a powerful combination.

What it would also be is a dramatic about-turn from the practice that Microsoft has more-or-less followed since its inception: make software, let others build the software hardware. But it diverted from those with the Xbox (at the urging of J Allard) with success, and then the Zune music player (less successful; interestingly also Allard's suggestion).

Microsoft as a hardware company? Stranger things have happened - such as Apple coming back from the dead. If it goes ahead, we'll be watching with fascination. Will the US government let it happen? (Probably.) Would the Finnish government? (Difficult.) The Finnish staff of Nokia? (Very difficult.)

And of course the other thing about this rumour: it'll never get stale. The Stephens Elop and Ballmer are going to spend a lot of time denying this and having their comments picked over minutely. Just watch.

HTML5 MP3 player lets you listen to your music library inside your browser

html5 browser mp3 audio player
While this slick little HTML5 audio player might not pack all of the features of your favorite desktop media application, it's still a very cool demonstration of what a Web app can do with access to local resources -- like MP3 and OGG files.

Just fire up http://antimatter15.github.com/player/player.html in your HTML5-compatible browser and browse to the topmost folder in your music library. The app will quickly build an index of all your tunes and let you start listening right inside your Web browser. Click on the filter library text, and you can enter a search string -- results load as you type.

There's a volume control, shuffle mode, play/pause control, and you can click and drag to skip forward or rewind during playback. As OMG! Ubuntu points out, you can even save the app to your hard drive and run it offline, which is pretty darn cool.

Not all browsers are equal when it comes to HTML5 implementation, of course. We found that Chrome worked the best, and Firefox was OK. It's also worth noting that this music player comes from the same developer that created one of our favorite restartless Firefox 4 add-ons, drag2up.

Sprint EVO 3D aiming for the fourth week of June?

Sprint EVO 3D

We just ran across the latest edition of the Sprint Playbook, and not surprisingly, the highly anticipated HTC EVO 3D makes an appearance. But along with all the specs and talking points -- which we've definitely seen before -- is the header, which points to the fourth week of June as a targeted release date.

We will, however, couch that by saying nothing's official yet, and we all know how release dates are subject to change. (And this seems to go against Radio Shack's "rough launch date" of June 4-ish, which we weren't all that confident in anyway.)

Anyhoo, it's coming, and we might now have a more solid target window, folks.

Jim Tressel’s sordid story ends in resignation

The storied and lately sordid Ohio State coaching career of Jim Tressel has come to an end.

According to several sources, he embattled coach was asked to resign amid an NCAA investigation that revealed various indiscretions at Ohio State during his tenure.

Honestly, it's mildly stunning that it took this long.

Three months ago, President E. Gordon Gee and Athletic Director Gene Smith said they supported Tressel, but that support began to waiver after new stories and allegations began to surface almost daily.

Tressel said in a release that it was best that he step down:

"After meeting with University officials, we agreed that it is in the best interest of Ohio State that I resign as head football coach. The appreciation that Ellen and I have for the Buckeye Nation is immeasurable."

Tressel's downfall can be traced back to April 2010 when he was emailed by former player and current Columbus attorney Christopher T. Cicero that his players were selling their memorabilia to tattoo parlor owner Edward Rife. Rife is currently under federal investigation by the U.S. Attorneys Office. It was the first of the 12 emails Tressel would exchange with Cicero. The communication concludes on June 6.

The rest of Tressel's collapse goes a little something like this:

? Sept. 13: Tressel signs an annual NCAA certificate of compliance form stating that he knows of no NCAA transgression within his team.

? Dec. 7: The U.S. Attorney's Office tells Ohio State officials that it discovered Ohio State memorabilia while raiding Rife's home. The merchandise is thought to be stolen.

? Dec. 9: Tressel lies and says it is the first time he's heard of players selling their memorabilia to Rife.

? Dec. 19: Oho State self reports violations to the NCAA.

? Dec. 22: NCAA suspends Terrelle Pryor, Dan Herron, Devier Posey, Mike Adams and Soloman Thomas for the first five games of the 2011 season.

? Jan. 13: Ohio State's office of legal affairs discovers emails between Tressel and Cicero.

? Jan. 16: Tressel is confronted and acknowledges knowing about the indiscretions since last September.

? Feb. 8: NCAA and school officials interview Tressel and he comes clean about his knowledge of his player's wrongdoings.

? March 8: Ohio State tells the NCAA about Tressel's violations and goes public about it.

? March 17: NCAA denies an appeal on behalf of the players.

? May 30: Tressel resigns.

Not included in this timeline are the multiple stories that surfaced regarding Rife and a car dealership that allegedly provided deals to Ohio State football players. But the nail in the coffin might have been last week's story by the Ohio State student paper, The Lantern, which detailed player violations thanks to the help of former wide receiver Ray Small. In the article, Small gave a callous account of players selling memorabilia for cash and getting deals at car dealerships. In the article, Small said he didn't understand why it was such a big deal and claimed, "(Some student-athletes) don't even think about (NCAA) rules."

Small tried to backtrack off the story late last week, but by that time the damage had been done.

Gee sent a letter to Ohio State trustees earlier this morning prior to the official announcement:

"I write to let you know that later this morning we will be announcing the resignation of Jim Tressel as head coach of the University's football program. As you all know, I appointed a special committee to analyze and provide advice to me regarding issues attendant to our football program. In consultation with the senior leadership of the University and the senior leadership of the Board, I have been actively reviewing the matter and have accepted Coach Tressel's resignation.

"My public statement will include our common understanding that throughout all we do, we are One University with one set of standards and one overarching mission. The University's enduring public purposes and its tradition of excellence continue to guide our actions."

Lost in all of this will be Tressel's achievements during his 10 seasons with the Buckeyes. He leaves with a record of 106-22, which makes his winning percentage better than Woody Hayes, who is considered the best coach in the school's history. Tressel was 9-1 against Michigan, he won seven Big Ten titles and the school's fifth national championship.

While Tressel should be mentioned in the same breath as Hayes when talking about the school's greatest coaches, his legacy will forever be tainted by this scandal.

Now Ohio State must decide which direction to go next. The university is still awaiting word from the NCAA regarding punishment for its violations and many speculate that it could be as bad or worse than the sanctions USC received, which included a loss of 30 scholarships over three years and a two-year postseason ban.

But Ohio State, even without Tressel, is good enough to challenge for a national championship if it finds the right leader. Assistant Luke Fickell, who was going to coach the first five games of the season that Tressel decided to take a self-imposed suspension, will serve as Ohio State's interim coach throughout the 2011 season. Then the school will conduct a formal search.

Look for Gee and Smith to target big names, including retired Florida coach Urban Meyer, Jon Gruden and Bo Pelini. Other names that might surface are Mark Dantonio, who was Tressel's protg, and Missouri's Gary Pinkel, who went to Kent State and made a name for himself at Toledo. And of course, Fickell will have an entire year to audition for one of the most prestigious programs in the country.

Skype 5.3 for Windows released, improves mobile video call quality

Version 5.3 of Skype for Windows has just been released, with the main emphasis of the new release being improved call quality, and the quality of video received by mobile Skype users. Presumably one party of the video call must be using Skype for Windows 5.3, though.

Beyond improved call quality, not much has changed. You can now see your friends' presence icons when contact cards are collapsed, and the topic editing button is now always visible on the conversation header. For a complete list of changes, hit up the Skype Garage blog.

Google Chrome now uses SPDY HTTP replacement, halves page load time

SPDY in Google Chrome
We're not entirely sure of the time line here, but it looks like Google has now rolled out the SPDY HTTP replacement to its full bevy of Web services, including Gmail, Docs, and YouTube. If you're currently using Google's Chrome browser you're probably already using SPDY.

We originally reported on SPDY way back in November 2009, when Google introduced it as yet another experiment in making the Web faster, like Go, Native Client and speculative pre-connections. Over the last 18 months, though, SPDY support has found its way into the stable build of Chrome.

SPDY is basically a streamlined and more efficient version of HTTP. At its most basic, SPDY introduces parallel, multiplexed streams over a single TCP connection -- but at the same time, SPDY allows for prioritization, so that vital content (HTML) can be sent before periphery content (JavaScript, video). All in all, the SPDY protocol can halve page load times, which is obviously rather significant.

The best bit, though, is that SPDY is an open-source project. HTTP 1.1 is a lumbering beast that needs to be replaced before low-latency real-time computing really becomes a reality, and SPDY is one of the best options currently on the table. To be honest, we're not sure why SPDY hasn't received more coverage -- it's awesome in every way. At the moment, though, the only way to help speed up SPDY's proliferation, is with an experimental Apache mod.

As far as actually 'trying it out,' your best bet is downloading Chrome, hitting up some Google sites, and then checking chrome://net-internals to see your active SPDY sessions. SPDY is a transparent replacement for HTTP, though, and as such it's rather hard to see its effects. Google's sites definitely feel fast in Chrome, but there are more technologies than just SPDY at work.

AVG launches LiveKive cloud sync and backup tool

avg livekive dropbox
A while back, we told you about AVG's new LiveKive service, a new cloud synchronization and backup tool which appears to have been named after a vat in which mash is made during the brewing process. But enough about AVG's odd choice of monikers -- LiveKive has launched and is now ready to accept your files into the AVG cloud.

LiveKive takes aim at services like Dropbox and SugarSync, though at the moment it's lagging behind in terms of features. As it stands, LiveKive is only compatible with Windows and OS X. There are no mobile clients yet, though with AVG's strong presence on Android we wouldn't be surprised to see an app arrive in the near future.

The company is offering a heck of a deal right now, however. If you sign up for a paid account during the launch phase, you can score unlimited storage for $80 for a whole year. You can't even score 50GB per year at that price from Dropbox, so if cost and space are more important to you than cross-platform availability, LiveKive might be worth checking out.

If you're not interested in ponying up any cash at the moment, you can still get a 5GB account free of charge. Just head on over, and create a LiveKive account.

Rossi Testing Ducati GP12 At Mugello, Alongside New Ducati Superbike

The return of the 1000cc MotoGP bikes in 2012 is keenly awaited, and testing for the 2012 season is now well underway. Ducati has had two days of testing at Jerez back in April, while Casey Stoner put in two days on the Honda at Jerez earlier this month.

As they did for the switch to 800cc back in 2007, Ducati is getting a lot of work done early, as Valentino Rossi is back on track at Mugello today (Thursday), testing the GP12 again, according to reports at GPOne.com. Rossi's test day will be the third of the eight days testing allowed with contracted (i.e. current MotoGP) riders on the 2012 machine, and as GPOne.com suggests, is a clue that the emphasis for Ducati is very much on being competitive from the start of the 2012 season.

Kelly: Michael Floyd’s suspension stands until ‘he changes the way he’s lived his life’

When Michael Floyd survived his brush with Notre Dame's notorious disciplinary council last month, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that the Irish's most lethal offensive weapon would be back to terrorizing opposing secondaries this fall. And it probably still is —just as soon as coach Brian Kelly agrees to life the indefinite suspension he slapped on Floyd in the wake of an early morning drunk driving arrest by campus police in March, Floyd's third alcohol-related offense in as many years.

And Kelly's still insisting he's not going to give his ground that easily just to get his best player back:

"We're looking at Mike as an 'all in or not' situation," Kelly told the South Bend Tribune. "In other words, he's changing his life or he's not. If he changes the way he's lived his life, he'll play every game for us. If he doesn't, he won't play one down here at Notre Dame.

"He is at that level. This is not, 'I'm going to slap you on the hand and sit you for two games' ? because I don't want to read about him in a year, where it says, 'Ex-Notre Dame player arrested for X-Y-Z.' That will be a failing on my part if that happens."
[…]
"There's no gray area anymore," Kelly said. "There just can't be. Too many times it's been, 'I'll change.' Look, you're parenting a young man whose close to being a teenager. As much as it hurts to say, 'He's done at Notre Dame,' if he doesn't change his life, he's done at Notre Dame. he's not going to play here."

That said, Kelly remains "optimistic" as Floyd continues "checking off the boxes" to a return: He's cleared the bar Kelly set for him academically ("He had to have a specific GPA, and he did") and seems to be making progress in counseling ("Reports back from professionals are really optimistic"). Next up: "Some community service stuff" mandated by the Res Life office and a court date on June 7, if he doesn't offer a guilty plea to avoid trial in the meantime.

All well and good, part of the proverbial process, etc., but really only brings us back to the same assumption: Barring another arrest or similarly colossal screw up that diverts him from the pre-approved path to righteousness, Floyd should be back in the fold by the start of preseason practice in late July, and — further assuming that "all-in or all-out" means he won't face any further suspensions once he is reinstated — in the lineup for the opener against South Florida. As long as he's smart enough to stay sober and his lawyers are smart enough to keep him from facing the possible (though unlikely) jail sentence that comes with the latest drunk driving charge, the path remains clear for a Floyd-ful fall.

Install the Windows Phone 7 NoDo update regardless of your carrier

windows phone 7 nodoSome of you who own Windows Phone 7 devices are still waiting for your pre-NoDo preparation update -- never mind NoDo itself. A few workarounds have been posted, but unfortunately they didn't work unless your carrier had completed testing and was ready to schedule the update.

Now, however, the Chevron WP7 team's Chris Walshie has delivered a handy little utility that will allow you to update any Windows Phone 7 device -- regardless of your carrier.
  1. Download and install the Windows Phone Support Tool (x86 or x64) and the ChevronWP7 Updater (x86 or x64)
  2. Launch ChevronWP7 Updater and select your language. If your language isn't listed, stop and do not update.
  3. If were running WP7 build 7004 (you can verify in Zune) then run the updater twice.
Once the process completes, you should be able to copy and paste to your heart's content. Let's just hope all this update foolishness gets sorted out before we're supposed to receive Mango.

Video: South Park vs. the NCAA

Already this year, it's been soberly discussed on Outside the Lines, expertly examined by Frontline and authoritatively critiqued by HBO. You know it's officially open season on the NCAA, however, when the Association comes within range of the past-their-prime but still deadly satirical guns of South Park, which came out firing in typically indiscriminate (and NSFW) fashion Wednesday night in an episode titled Crack Baby Athletic Association:

And that bit deliciously-accented soap-boxery is pretty much all Parker and Stone have to say about that: After spending the first two-thirds of the episode skewering the usual excuses for keeping "amateurs" from a bigger cut on their way to the explicit "NCAA as Slave Master" analogy, they abruptly (though hilariously) shift focus to the fable of a Dutch saint named "Vunter Slaush" ? and sort of wind up admitting that actually, yeah, the deplorable scheme can help the people it was exploiting in the end.

Altogether, nothing that the NCAA and other friends of "amateurism" haven't heard many, many times before, from critics they probably respect more than obscenity-spewing cartoon children. But they've never been hit a more withering, soul-searing critique than "You sound like Cartman."

Blog Post: Dr. Beach?s Top 10 Beaches

Memorial Day weekend is here, and it’s time again for Stephen Leatherman, aka “Dr. Beach,” to announce his annual list of Top 10 Beaches.

This year’s winner may surprise you.

Leatherman, the director of Florida International University’s Laboratory for Coastal Research, has chosen Siesta Beach in Sarasota, Fla., as his No. 1 pick based on 50 measurable criteria. It’s ironic, given that this strip of sand, along with many other Gulf Coast beaches, saw tourism plummet after the BP/Deep Horizon oil spill dumped 5 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico last year.

As Leatherman notes, however, that visitation drop was unwarranted. He predicted that a Gulf of Mexico phenomenon known as the Loop Current would prevent oil from washing ashore on Siesta Beach, and he predicted correctly. Yet, visitors stayed away.

We’ve seen this tourism fallout before. When the Exxon Valdez oil spill happened in 1989, people stopped going to Alaska. TV ads at the time provided a powerful visual: An extreme close-up of Marilyn Monroe’s face that made her beauty mark fill the entire TV screen. Just as one could not fault the Hollywood icon for a blemish, the ad stated, one could not fault the enormous state of Alaska for the oil spill in Prince William Sound.

Just so, beach goers should feel confident reveling in Siesta Beach’s powdery white sand and clear blue waters. It was not soiled by the BP oil spill, nor was St. Petersburg, also a victim of tourist misperceptions. You’ll even find St. George Island State Park on this year’s Top 10 list. It’s another delightful Gulf Coast beach on the Florida panhandle, undeveloped and filled with soft white sands.

When it comes to the Gulf, “the coast is clear.” As freelancer John Rosenthal reported for Bing Travel in May, it’s safe to go back in the water. Need the full scoop? Read his article, Gulf Coast Beaches: Swim, Dine, Fish. And Thank the Loop Current.

What do you think of this year’s Top 10 list? Have you been to a Gulf Coast beach since the oil spill and wish to share a review? Post a comment for other beachgoers below.

Building apps for big celebrities

Brothers John and Sam Shahidi are living the classic American dream. The pair developed RunPee, a small iPhone application that lets you find the right time to take a bathroom break during a movie. The app became so popular that the brothers founded a startup company called RockLive. They used their experience with RunPee to help sports celebrities develop their own iOS applications and social presence.

Their first client was Chad Ochocinco of the Cincinnati Bengals and they recently signed Mike Tyson. The brothers developed a free game, Mike Tyson Main Event, that's been downloaded almost one million times. During this time, RockLive has grown from two to 22 employees. The California company is still expanding and looking to attract clients outside the sports realm. So who is on their radar? Musicians, celebrity chefs and stay-at-home Moms, of course.
