John McEnroe was shopping in Hermes on Wednesday morning with his wife, recovering from a night in which he saw Pink Floyd's Roger Waters perform "The Wall" in Paris, when his phone rang. It was Novak Djokovic. He wanted a hitting partner.
The 1984 French Open finalist accepted the invite and headed to Roland Garros where he engaged in a light practice session with the man who on Friday will attempt to tie his record for longest winning streak to start the season.
Why did Djokovic call McEnroe? Surely it wasn't for fashion tips. The world No. 2 says he wanted to work on his serve-and-volley game before facing Roger Federer in the French Open semis.
Considering he'll have four full days off in between his matches, he also could use the practice. After the session he talked to Johnny Mac about the long layoff.
"It's been a couple of days off now and it's a really strange situation that I'm in. I've never been in this situation before especially in the second week of a Grand Slam. I don't think it's going to affect my rhythm that much. I really feel good on the court and am getting ready for a big challenge. [...] I'm eager to get back to the court and compete."
Djokovic has won 43 consecutive matches since December. He's hoping his record streak won't end like McEnroe's. McEnroe made it all the way to the French Open finals in 1984 before losing to Ivan Lendl.
