Headlinin?: Father charged in death of Auburn signee?s mother

Making the morning rounds.

? RIP. Tonya Bray, mother of hyped Auburn signee Quan Bray, was shot and killed Sunday morning during a car chase in her hometown of LaGrange, Ga. Police quickly charged Bray's father, Jeffrey Jones, who they said turned himself in at Troup County Jail within an hour of Tonya Bray being pronounced dead at a local hospital. According to her brother ?who was also Quan's high school coach ? the couple had been together since their son's birth but had been living separately for about six months.

As a recruit, Quan Bray was fifth among "all-purpose" backs and 109th overall in the 2011 class, according to Rivals, and turned down offers from the entire SEC to sign with Auburn in February. [al.com, Columbus Ledger-Enquirer]

? Declan Sullivan update. Notre Dame has agreed to pay $42,000 as part of a settlement with the state of Indiana, a little more than half of the original fine levied by the state for multiple safety violations in the death of student videographer Declan Sullivan during an Irish practice last October. The settlement also calls for Notre Dame to make an undisclosed contribution to a memorial for Sullivan and start a campaign on the hazards of scissor lifts like the one he was filming from when it toppled in high winds. ? 'Fessing up, part one. Following in Michigan's footsteps, Maryland has agreed to dock itself 2 hours of practice time from its weekly 20-hour allotment throughout the 2011 season as penance for exceeding NCAA-mandated practice limits last year. The Terps also self-reported violations for allowing graduate assistants and inters to monitor "voluntary" summer workouts, and imposed the penalties itself with the NCAA's blessing. [Baltimore Sun]

? 'Fessing up, part two. In other NCAA enforcement news, Alabama has released the details of 44 secondary violations it's reported to Indianapolis over the last two years, 16 of them involving the football team. Most of the football violations involved recruiting ?impermissible text messages, providing transportation on an unofficial visit, publicizing a recruit, etc. ?and required some combination of "rules education" and charitable donations by the offenders. ? Everything's coming up Commodores. On the recruiting trail, Vanderbilt ?yes, that Vanderbilt ?is celebrating arguably the single greatest recruiting weekend in school history after picking up verbal commitments from three coveted in-state products on Friday, one of them from hyped Memphis product Brian Kimbrow, the No. 1 prospect in the state of Tennessee and the No. 2 "all-purpose" back in the entire 2012 class. If Kimbrow sticks with the Commodores, he'll be only the third four-star prospect to sign with Vandy since Rivals started keeping track in 2002 (the last one, Atlanta running back Rajaan Bennett, was shot and killed last year just a few weeks after signing day) and will likely give first-year coach James Franklin the most hyped signing class in Nashville since the days of Bobby Dodd. ? The Rap Sheet. Illinois signee Chris Jones, a 6-foot-5/300-pound defensive tackle prospect from Jacksonville, Fla., was being held on $100,000 bond Sunday after an early morning arrest for aggravated battery against two men who claim they were attacked for their sexual orientation. According to the police report, the men suffered "noticeable swelling" to the face and a cut lip, respectively, but neither went to the hospital. (Jones said they were targeted in response to another fight last week.) Coach Ron Zook said he's gathering information and has no initial comment. [Champaign News-Gazette]

Quickly? Former Tennessee running back David Oku is charged with domestic assault. ? A USC commit reopens his recruitment. ? Mike Gundy is "discouraged" by a rash of decommitments from Oklahoma State. ? Backup tight end Michael McFarland is transferring from Florida. ? Nebraska fans feel Michigan's pain. ? The Auburn band gets its rings. ? And is anyone actually going to watch the Longhorn Network?
