The best thing we can say about Brian Fuentes' outing on Saturday is that he didn't actually blow the save, because he entered the game with the score tied in the ninth ... and then he untied it. Fuentes took the loss, giving up three singles and a wild pitch in a rough inning against the Mariners.
In fairness to the veteran lefty, Seattle actually took the lead on an infield hit by Ichiro Suzuki, and it's almost ridiculous that anyone could have put this ball in play. Ichiro is just not a normal batter.
The final line for Fuentes looked like this: 1.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 K, WP, 30 pitches. So that's ugly. He never looks like he should be effective, so he's a tough guy to scout from your couch. Remember, he's only the interim closer for Oakland, and Grant Balfour may eventually get a look in the final frame. Balfour pitched 1.2 uneventful innings on Saturday, allowing just one hit.
We should also note that all the recent reports on Andrew Bailey (forearm) have been positive. He did some throwing at 120 feet on Saturday, then said, "That's the best I've felt." Bailey is expected to throw again on Monday and Tuesday. His spring injury looked like a potential season-ender at the time, but it appears he's escaped serious harm. Still, he's probably weeks away from assisting the A's and the fantasy community.
